Kochi, often called the Queen of the Arabian Sea, is a city that beautifully blends history, heritage, cultures, nature, and modern development. If we had to capture our time here in one sentence, it would be this: Kochi is India in miniature — diverse, welcoming, and full of life.

Whether it’s the backwaters, the centuries of multicultural history, or the food that warms your soul, Kochi offers something for everyone. If Kerala is a true reflection of diversity, Kochi is its beating heart.

Below is a detailed 2-day Kochi itinerary from our trip, covering historical landmarks, unique cafes, and local experiences.

Kochi Travel

Day 1: Exploring Fort Kochi and Jew Town

Start with the Water Metro
We began our Kochi journey with the world’s first Water Metro, an eco-friendly, affordable, and efficient way to travel across the city’s many islands. From Ernakulam, we cruised to Fort Kochi.

  • Timings: Mon–Sat: 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM | Sun: 8:00 AM to 10:30 PM

As soon as we arrived, we caught sight of the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets — a living piece of maritime history brought to India by Chinese traders centuries ago.

Jew Town & Pardesi Synagogue
Our next stop was the historic Jew Town, tracing its roots back to King Solomon’s time. After the Roman invasion, many Jewish traders settled here, contributing richly to the fabric of Kochi.

The highlight was the Pardesi Synagogue, built in the 1500s on land gifted by the King of Kochi. Fascinatingly, it shares a wall with a Hindu temple, symbolising coexistence in the truest form.

  • Timings:
    • Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu & Sun: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
    • Fri: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
    • Closed on Saturdays

A Traditional Kerala Sadhya
For lunch, we indulged in a traditional Sadhya meal at Gokul Ottupurra. Served on banana leaves with 26 dishes, including the heavenly payasam, this is truly the essence of Kerala cuisine.

  • Timings: 7:00 AM – 10:30 PM

Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace)
Post lunch, we visited the historic Mattancherry Palace, originally built by the Portuguese for the ruler Veera Kerala Verma Raja, later renovated by the Dutch. Today, it is a museum housing exquisite murals depicting the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

  • Timings: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed on Fridays)
  • Entry Fee: ₹2

And with that, Day 1 wrapped up on a perfect note — history, spirituality, and culture all in one.

Day 2: Vasco Da Gama Square & Kochi’s Modern Side

St. Francis Church
We kicked off our second day with a visit to St. Francis Church, one of the oldest European churches in India. History buffs will love the fact that Vasco Da Gama was buried here for 14 years before his remains were taken to Portugal. His gravestone is still a point of great interest.

  • Timings: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Café-Hopping in Fort Kochi
Kochi is known for its artsy cafes that combine good food with creative vibes. We tried two favourites:

  • Kashi Art Café – A vibrant space filled with art that serves delicious coffee and food.
    • Timings: 8:30 AM – 10:00 PM
  • Leela Art Cafe – With a completely different atmosphere, this café wowed us with its cosy setup and indulgent desserts.
    • Timings: 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Modern Kochi at Lulu Mall
To end the trip, we shifted gears from heritage to modernity by visiting Lulu Mall, one of the largest in India, famous for its massive hypermarket. We used the Kochi Metro to reach the mall — an easy, affordable, and convenient choice since it connects directly to the complex.

  • Timings: 9:00 AM – 11:00 PM

Why Visit Kochi?

Kochi is not just a destination; it’s an experience. From its centuries-old history written across palaces and synagogues to its evolving identity with modern metros and malls, the city bridges the past and the present in the most seamless way.

If Kerala is God’s Own Country, then Kochi is its soul.
